The Plan

We will support the restoration process in Northern Uganda by starting a primary school that will equip children with the necessary tools to break the cycle of poverty. The school project is our first undertaking, and we are extremely excited about it.

Education transforms lives

For most of Africa's children, education represents the only way out of a life of poverty. Across the continent, millions of families currently subsist on less than $1.00 a day. Only children who can read, write and do arithmetic can hope to get better paying jobs when they grow up.

But education is about much more than just providing job skills. It's playing an increasingly vital role in helping children protect themselves against the diseases that can ravage poor communities. Simple information on day-to-day hygiene and disease prevention saves lives and keeps families together

Mercy’s Village is collaborating with local government officials and communities to create a school that offers a safe place where children can learn, play and have access to clean water, a balanced meal and sanitation facilities.

Our school will also provide sustenance through the provision of school meals. For many growing children, the meal they get at school is their only hot meal of the day.

We are focusing on helping the most disadvantaged – orphans, children living in extreme poverty, and young girls. Statistics show that most girls in the area do not have the same chance of graduating when compared to the boys in their area. Girls face multiple challenges once they get home from school: cleaning the house, babysitting younger siblings, fetching water to cook, etc… With all these responsibilities they have little time to study, and it’s extremely difficult for girls to succeed in school. We intend to break that cycle by building a mixed boarding school.

Mixed boarding school is where the boys and girls all attend the same school during the day – but at night the boys go home and the girls stay in their dorm rooms. By keeping the girls at school year-round we are ensuring that they have a safe and quiet place where they can learn, study and do homework.

Multiple studies (view one here) have shown the benefits of investing in girls’ education. It shows up in a country’s economic and political spheres, in the creation of smaller and more sustainable families, and in the prevention against common diseases.

To achieve our goals, we need to raise $250,000. The money will be used for the construction of 3 central buildings – 9 classrooms, teacher’s quarters, and a community building - digging a bore hole, dormitories and showers for the girls, restrooms and kitchen. We've already acquired land for our school - but we need more funding to start the building process, along with the many phases of development to come.

Sustainability and growth potential are key elements of the Mercy’s Village school campaign. We will work to set up the foundation for the school, and with time local people will eventually take over responsibility for maintaining and running it. You can help us empower Africa's children to take control of their future.

We've chosen to tackle this project by breaking it into 3 phases. Phase 1 was to acquire land for our school and now we are focusing on Phase 2 - which is all about fundraising for the buildings.
